4 Days in Marrakech: Medina, Gardens and Desert

Marrakech is noise, colour and the smell of spices. To avoid burnout, balance the medina's energy with gardens and a riad pool. Four days work well if you pace by intensity: start strong, slow down, ramp up again.

Stay in a riad inside the medina — the contrast between the chaos outside and the calm inner courtyard is part of the experience. Book the airport transfer ahead; the medina is a maze and taxis don't reach every door.

Cover up modestly when visiting mosque exteriors, haggle in the souks calmly (first prices are often double), and keep an empty afternoon to do nothing in particular.

  1. Day 1

    Arrival and first night at Jemaa el-Fna

    Land, transfer to the riad and walk to Jemaa el-Fna at dusk. Rooftop dinner with a view.

  • Always have an offline map — GPS loses signal in the medina.
  • Ask before taking photos of people.
  • A traditional hammam is a must — gender-separated, 1-2 h.
  • Reserve rooftop dinners ahead: try Nomad or La Terrasse des Épices.
  • Agafay desert is doable as a half-day; Merzouga needs 2-3 days.

Is Marrakech safe?

Yes in tourist areas. People will pitch tours or shop visits — a firm 'la, shukran' (no, thanks) usually does it.

Card or cash?

Bring cash (dirhams) for souks, taxis and small meals. Riads take cards.

Do I need a guide for the medina?

Recommended for the first day (3-4 h). After that you can explore solo with a map.

Can I see the desert in four days?

Only Agafay (half day, no overnight). Merzouga needs 2-3 extra days.
